As we begin talking about colors, we’ll explore how you can create calm spaces with neutrals. Neutral colors are versatile, elegant & timeless. Many may steer away from a neutral palette due to assumptions that neutral colors equate with plain or boring. But to be honest, I love using neutrals! So let me explain why. They’re a good back drop to incorporate pops of color if you so desire without long term commitment.
Secondly, they allow bold textures and architectural elements to be featured. Also, neutrals work with any design style such as boho, traditional, modern, industrial, eclectic or minimalist. In addition, they are considered timeless because they usually can withstand color trends that come and go. And lastly, since colors are proven to influence our mental and physical state, neutrals are a good choice. Because if you want to surround yourself with a relaxing and visually and vibrationally less stimulating environment a neutral palate can do that for you. Next, we’ll talk about what colors to choose to create calm spaces with neutrals.
Neutrals: Black, Gray, White, Tan, & Brown
The following are some neutral colors and what their significance means in North American color psychology. The color white is associated with cleanliness, innocence, goodness, purity, spaciousness, and neutrality. In some cultures it signifies mourning. The color black relates to elegance, authority, power, mystery, strength, intelligence, sophistication, and death or mourning. Gray represents calm, neutrality, modern, timelessness, and balance. Brown/tan/beige symbolize reliability, stability, earth/nature, warmth, security, natural, friendship, and organic. What is the vibrational frequency that you want to come home to at the end of a stressful day? For example, for me I’ve chosen the less vibrant thus less stimulating colors in the gray family for my own home. This is because stronger vibrations of bold colors would be too strong for me and less relaxing. Overall, using neutrals in my own space has brought me calm and balance.
