In this post we’ll talk about being a minimalist vs. maximalist and which is better. Minimalism embraces clean lines and muted colors. Maximalism encourages bold colors and mixed patterns. We hear so much about minimalism and how this is the life style to strive for but is it really a fit for everyone? My goal today is to let you know that it’s okay to not be a minimalist. It’s alright to not even want to be a minimalist. In other words, it’s okay to have things. Things can bring beauty to our surroundings. Things can be mementos that brighten our mood. Things can represent style, accomplishments, adventures, culture, heritage and family. Similarly, it’s okay to love colors and patterns. If these things bring you joy, if colors evoke happiness, then that is definitely okay to bring those into your space.
A Minimalist-Maximalist Spectrum
For example, I’m definitely not a minimalist but I’m also not a maximalist. I love the beauty that things can bring to the home. I’ve also had a love affair with colors. I love colors! I buy things that I don’t need just because of the color. Whether it’s beautiful and bold or soft and gentle. I’m attracted to colors. But like any good love affair, me and colors we’re taking some time apart. “It’s not you magenta, though your striking beauty enthralls me. It’s just that right now, gray is what I need in my life. Gray is… well calm and stable yet sophisticated”.
In addition, we may associate anything that is not minimalism as cluttered or over designed. But there is so much beauty in both the minimalist and maximalist designs. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While I definitely believe getting rid of clutter and getting organized are great goals to have but do you have to get down to the bare minimum? I think not. If it doesn’t bring you joy then it’s not for you. It’s about being curated not cluttered. As every individual is unique, the look and feel of your home should be as well.
In conclusion, when you ask minimalist vs. maximalist, which is better? The answer is neither. Because you don’t have to be one or the other just to follow current trends. Actually, minimalist and maximalist styles should be seen as two ends of one spectrum. Where you fall on that spectrum is dependent upon your own unique style and what brings you bliss.
