In this post I’m sharing with you the 3 best New Year’s Resolutions for the home. A new year is the signaling of a new beginning. It is a time to reflect on the days behind us and say good bye. And, with hope and uncertainty, we look towards the horizon of a new year and new possibilities. Saying goodbye to the past and welcoming the new is sort of a purging. We are letting go of our past wounds and victories. This “clearing out” allows us to make room for new memories and new goals. It is a time for renewal and rebirth.
In addition, purging can be applied to the home. “Out with the old-in with the new” is a well known phrase but not well practiced. It is a process of letting go of what no longer serves a purpose. This can create new places and spaces in the home. Below are some strategies to practice “out with the old in with the new” in your home.
My 3 Best New Year’s Resolutions for the Home:
Best New Year’s Resolution #1 Downsize & Donate:
In this paragraph I’m going to discuss the best New Year’s resolutions for the home, to downsize and donate. You can purge what is no longer useful or purposeful in your home by downsizing and donating. Purging can be an emotional process so be prepared to acknowledge those feelings and let them go as well. Let’s create a new outlook on downsizing. Reframe it to see it as an opportunity for giving instead of seeing it as a loss. When you donate your goods you are giving your old belongings new purpose. They will be fulfilling the needs of someone else. There is always someone out there that may be much more in need of those items.
Best New Year’s Resolution #2 Repurpose & Renew:
Secondly, repurposing or renewing is a great New Year’s resolution for creating a healthy home. Repurpose and renew is not to contradict purging but to cut down on spending. When you repurpose and renew older items, it minimizes going out and buying new stuff. For example, I was trying to spruce up the front patio and wanted to go out shopping for new patio chairs. But to save some money, I took these two wooden folding chairs that I had hiding out in the garage. They were severely neglected, being left out in the rain and sun for years. But with a little bit of effort, they were renewed! All for the cost of sand paper and several cans of spray paint. This is a good example of renewing old items to cut down on spending.
In addition, repurposing items can be a fun way to restyle your home. Do you need a new trash can? See if you have some old baskets that you no longer use. With some TLC they can be repurposed into a more stylish trashcan. For instance, I know for myself, I could go shopping in my own closets and garage and find things I didn’t know I had that can be repurposed. Likewise, you can repurpose many items through crafting. This can be just for fun or for business. In other words, repurposing old items can be a new hobby for yourself that can make you some extra cash on a site like Etsy.
Best New Year’s Resolution #3 Listen & Love:
Lastly, and most importantly, one of the best New Year’s resolution for you and your home is to listen & love. You can keep yourself and your home in a healthy state with listening and loving. You can do this by designating a space in the home for the quiet of stillness. Your goal is to create a “quiet zone” where you can practice mindfulness, meditation, silent reading, or just being. Taking the time there to be still and just listen. Listen to your heart. Listen to your inner voice. Listen to the whispers of the universe.
Similarly important, is to create a goal that allows for the time and space for self-love. You can fill your spirit with the feeling of love while you meditate or while you’re washing the dishes. It doesn’t really matter where you do it, just that you do it. Let the feeling of love permeate through you and all around you. This will fill you and your home with positive energy. When we fill ourselves with love, we will not seek validation through the outer. Through things. Through others. We will feel fulfilled as we are.
